CAUSATIVE VERBS
(KATA KERJA PERINTAH)
Causative verbs ini biasanya digunakan untuk
menyuruh seseorang untuk melakukan sesuatu.
Read the
following dialog.
Andre : The air
conditioner is on, but it’s still hot. I think it is low in refrigerant.
Shinta : I will call
the technician. I will have him check the air conditioner.
The word ‘have’ in the sentence is a causative
verb. When a person usesa causative verb, it means that he/she does not perform
the action himself/herself, but another person does it for him/her. There are
several causative verb, they are make, have, and get.
Patterns:
HAVE
·
Subject + have/has/had + O Person + Infinitive
(active)

Subject + have/has/had + O Thing + Verb III or
V3 (passive)
Example :
Shella: I have Amir
shine my shoes. (Active)
Putri : I have my
shoes shined is Amir. (Passive)

GET
·
Subject + get/gets/got + O Person + to
Infinitive (active)
·
Subject + get/gets/got + O Thing + Verb III or
V3 (passive)
Example :
Tara : He gets the
maid to shine his shoes. (Active)
Jack : He gets his
shoes shined by the maid. (Passive)
Functions
(Kata Fungsi):
a) Using causative make means that we
force a person do a task, so he/she has no other options unless doing it.
Example: The many
orders made the employees work overtime.
b) Using causative have means that we
ask a person to do a task.
Example: Mr.
Miller has his secretary write e-mails.
c) Using causative get means that we
persuade a person to do a task.
Example: Ronald has
got his sister to sweep the floor.
d) To give a passive meaning, we use past
participle after causative verbs.
Example: Linda had
her shoes repaired at a cobbler’s.
